Who Yuko Kaseki, Art

Director, choreographer, Butoh dancer and teacher

Yuko Kaseki studied Butoh dance and performing art at the HBK Braunschweig with Anzu Furukawa and danced in her company “Dance Butter Tokio and Verwandlungsamt” from 1989 to 2000. In 1995, together with Marc Ates, she founded cokaseki – a dance company that sees itself as an ensemble for performative research at the intersection of dance, visual art and experimental music.

Yuko Kaseki’s much-awarded solo and ensemble performances, collaborations and improvisations have taken her all over the world. Her strong interest in crossing boundaries of physical expression has led to projects with mixed-abled artists and to numerous collaborations with artists from other fields.

The vivid poetic images of Yuko Kaseki are carried by the spirit of Butoh, her performances not least always by the aim of reflecting the existence of outsiders.

Artist Mission: Growing Old and Dancing

»When it comes to Butoh, getting old and dancing is gold. Each wrinkle has its own history, its own story.«
